The Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring): Prologue and Ch.1 discussion

I have been on and off trying to read the works of The legendary J.R.R. Tolkien. Started a project blog long ago, but it was deleted due to a technical mistake; last week. I finally started a Goodreads reading group aka Keen On Tolkien, where we aim to read J. R. R. Tolkien's books by order, starting with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

The Reading Schedule is as the following:
1. We will be reading a chapter for a week starting Sunday.
2. The chapter discussions will be every Saturday.

Therefore, last week we read the prologue and Chapter 1 of-of Lord of The Rings; and had Saturday 14/10/2018 for Group discussion.

P.S. I dream of turning this project like The Classics Club, so if you would like to join, please do go ahead.

The Lord of the Rings: Prologue and Ch.1 discussion

As we gathered around the virtual fire, we had a mini discussion group - the rest of the readers are busy because it was the new academic year. Still, we had the following questions and answers.

1. What do you think of the Prologue and Ch.1? Is it enlightening and did you get a different perspective than the movies?

Answer No.1:
For CH.1 The Long-Expected Party, I managed to get the full details I never knew about from the movie, for example, what was the birthdate of Bilbo and some more details about the Shire and the decorations they made.

It's a really nice experience to watch what you've read, or read what you've watched.

Answer No.2:
For me, I loved the life background, and the family tree that can be just spoken about as origins but too long to write down. I also enjoyed that Bilbo did not say his long speech, he was very nice, nicer than how The Lord of the Rings trilogy portrayed him.

Adding, Gandalf is as fun as the movie, yet calmer, he did not grasp Frodo and told him to destroy the ring.

Merry was there was Frodo, not Sam, and the Dragon was light to announce the party.

2. What are the differences between Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits? What are the Favorite colours for Hobbits?

The long conflict between Dwarves and Elves goes back to the creators of Middle Earth, so they sent the Dwarves to mines and Elves to have a long life and live in the forest.

"What are the Favorite colours for Hobbits?"

I think yellow and green.

3. Hobbits of the shire used to wear leather shoes, that's why they've been into the shoe-making craft. True or False??

They have hairy feet with tough leathery soles, so they hardly wear shoes.

4. The party guests were listening to Bilbo's speech when they felt insulted by something he said ... can you explain why they felt so?

22 is the 2nd of September aka Frodo and Bilbo's birthday.
111 Bilbo's age on his birthday.
144 Bilbo's and Frodo's ages combined together.

5. How did Frodo got adopted by Bilbo?

When Bilbo was ninety-nine, he adopted Frodo as his heir and brought him to live at Bag End

6. The party guests were listening to Bilbo's speech when they felt insulted by something he said ... can you explain why they felt so?

Answer No.1:
He stopped them from dancing and enjoying the party with his rather hard speech.

Answer No2.:

“I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” then he said " Together we score 144. your numbers were chosen to fit this remarkable total: One Gross, if I may use the expression"

Many of his guests were insulted, feeling sure they had only been asked to fill up the required number, like goods in a package.

All in all, it was a wonderful reading and the club is still forming. For this week, we are reading ch.2 and ch.3.
